ICEBERG
For this series, the artist wants to share with
her audience a glimpse of her true nature. Emily believes there are many people out there holding the same experience as she does. She is not used to expressing her inner thoughts outwardly due to her shyness and introverted nature. The reason behind it draws back to her being brought up in a conservative Chinese family. Thus, it is our culture to keep our thoughts to ourselves especially the negative ones. Sigmund Freud once quoted, “The mind is like an iceberg, it floats with one-seventh of it’s bulk above the water”. As portrayed in Emily's artwork, the coldness and lack of emotions signified by the icebergs and cold grey background. Just like an iceberg, much is hidden and unseen underneath the facade of a calm and quiet surface. Relating it to the thoughts and feelings that ran through her mind, never to be fully expressed. However, it has trained her to have an inner strength that is as tough as a rock to endure whatever hardships that come her way. |
